In science, we have been learning about the needs of
animals. We did a research project where students explored an animal of their
choice. Students chose a book from the learning commons about their animal. Then
they created a replica of their animal out of paper mache. Students then
created an animal habitat to show where their animal lives and made a book to
inform others about their animal.

Reading
Learning to read in Grade One is so fun! Listening to
stories is an important part of learning to read. Throughout the year we have
been recording each story that we read aloud as a class. One student is chosen
each day to draw a picture to represent the stories we read. We display them in
our classroom calendar until the end of the month, then we glue them onto our book
collage that is displayed in our classroom library.
Here are some of the favorite books of the year according to
the Grade Ones:
o
Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus. I liked it
because it was so funny!
o
Give Me Back My Dad. It’s funny because the Dad
says the fish are smart and the daughter doesn’t think. Then the fish throws up
the 50,000 dollars and then the daughter believes that the fish are smart.
o
The City Book. I like it because it has all of
the cities except for some of them.
o
50 Below Zero. I like it because this guy is
sleeping on the fridge and then he is sleeping on the car. And then he’s
sleeping out and it’s 50 below zero and he’s like frozen. Then he ties up his
toe to the toilet and he gets stuck.
o
Wait and See. I like it because it was so funny
cause the boy made a birthday cake and wished for lots of snow and it came
true. And then he wished for more stuff like water, money and babies.
o
Seeing Red. The red and the hot one. The boy explodes
and the fire comes out of his head!
o
Moose. I like it because it’s really funny. It’s
funny because when the sisters come out and spray Luke and then they spray the
moose and Luke doesn’t care if he gets soaked. And then he just grabs the rest
of the carrots and ran after the moose.
o
Mortimer. I like it because when his mom says be
quiet, he shakes his head but he was actually lying and he was making sounds.
