Loose Parts Communities

The Grade Ones have been learning about community in Social Studies. Students have explored different levels of community that they are connected to through our yearlong inquiry of “how are we connected?” Students explored different communities they are connected to including their homes, classroom and school, the larger community, and Calgary. We also talked about the characteristics of the prairies because we live in a prairie community and the difference between rural and urban communities. Students recorded their learning through our suitcase project.  After learning about these different levels of community, we are starting to talk more in-depth about community in general. We will look more closely at the different roles and jobs within a community, why they are important, and how people contribute to the larger community.

For this project, students used a variety of loose parts building materials. They worked in small groups to create their own community. Here are some photos of the communities they created and some of the ideas students had about what their community included.

“We have a lot of tunnels because cars are going faster and this is something that goes up when cars can go and it goes down when cars cannot go.”

“This is the park because kids can play."

“This is where the pets are and then the pups have to go over to this house. That is the cage for them if they wanna go in”

“There’s houses and trees because the houses are for living and trees is air”

“A wishing well so if we are in danger or need something we could just go to the wishing well and wish for it. It might not work every time.”

“A torch so if it gets dark someone was out there that would be a light so they don’t get lost.”

“Some leaves, some grass and clouds, pinecones, a waterfall, a house, and leafs. There is a river. There’s a house over here. There’s some bricks, and rocks and mountain.”

“A bridge and some water. A well for water for animals and people. Some toys for animals and some food to eat. And corn for feed too.”
