What is a pattern?

The Grade One's have been learning about patterns. Students have explored pattern making using a variety of loose parts materials. Students have been challenged to make 3 and 4 part patterns and to use different attributes when designing their patterns.  Here are some of the patterns they created.

Together, we made a list of different attributes to be used when creating patterns.

We also worked with partners to create movement patterns. Students made their patterns then represented them in drawings. "So we did snap, snap, turn, clap and would be AABC in letters." - Grade 1 Student 

Grade One Authors

The Grade One's have been working on a story writing project. 

Step 1

We brainstormed setting ideas then each student chose the setting they would like to create. Students got into small groups to draw and paint their setting.

Step 2

Each student chose 1 or 2 characters that made sense for their setting. They created a character puppet to show their character.

Step 3

We talked about how stories tell about a problem and then how the problem is solved. Students made a story plan using a graphic organizer to tell the beginning, problem, solution and ending of their story.

Step 4

We started writing! Students used a “First, Next, Then, Last” model to write their stories. They used words and pictures to tell their story.

Step 5

Students published their stories. They created a title and displayed their work for parents to see at student-led conferences!

This was the grade one’s first time writing a story and they did such a great job! They should be so proud!
